The Pacifist Campaign was established in 1996 by a small group of people in Guildford in order to ensure that there was a candidate in the next General Election committed totally and unequivocally to peace. Funds were very limited but some copies of The Pacifist leaflet were produced and delivered in the constituency in the months before the election. John Morris stood in 1997, and again in 2001, the pacifist share of the vote cast increasing by about 50%. To comply with new legislation, The Pacifist Party was set up and formally recognised early in 2001. In 2003 the name was changed to "The Peace Party - Non-violence, Justice, Environment". In 2004, the Party contested the South East Region in the European Parliamentary Elections, achieving over twelve and a half thousand votes, and in 2005, the Party contested Brighton Kemptown and Guildford in the General Election together with three county council seats, one in Kent and two in Guildford. Regular meetings are held, a Peace Stall is set up from time to time, signatures are collected for petitions and a weekly Silent Vigil for Peace is held in Guildford High Street. Individual members campaign in other areas of peace work..
